Abstract
This chapter draws upon the many ideas and insights that I have gained from my interactions with scholars of ecological economics in India. While the list ls too long to be given here, I would like to acknowledge them collectively as those who have been active in the formation and functioning of the Indian Society for Ecological Economics. But special thanks are also due to Kanchan Chopra, A. Vaidyanathan, MV. Nadlcami, Vikram Dayal, and B. Somanathan for their very useful comments on and inputs to an earlier draft. Tuey, of course, are not responsible for all the shortcomings that., still remain. Financial support for this and other explora'tions in ecological economics and interdisciplinarity over the past several years has come primarily from the Ford Foundation and is gratefully acknowledged. 1 I recognize th~t environmental economics is not considered synonymous with ecological economics by many economists, particularly in the West Fortunately, in the Indian context, this divide is not very sharp-the Indian Society for Ecological on and have made individual efforts to bring insights from other disciplines into their analysis of the environment since the late 1980s.2 Tue setting up of the Indian Society for Ecological Economics (INSEE) in 1998 crystallized these ideas. INSEE's mission statement can be taken as exemplifying the typical thinking about interdisciplinarity amongst Inman ecological economists in India. It states:
