While the country goes into unprecedented lockdown to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, another threat looms large over peninsular India as the summer approaches: water scarcity. Last year’s excess rains notwithstanding, many villages and towns will face line up for hours, more poor farmers will quit farming and migrate, and rich farmers will spend more money on new borewells to replace failed ones.
