Abstract
Once sprawling across the rivers of the Western Ghats, the Myristica Swamps, which were a vast network of freshwater swamps, have dwindled into mere fragments over time, primarily due to human activities. These fragile fragments of Myristica Swamps are found in parts of Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa. The objective of my study was to assess if human disturbances to the Myristica Swamps impact the Odonate communities. This study was conducted across 14 swamps in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka during the months of March and April. The presence or intensity of disturbance was not found to have a significant impact on the Odonate diversity, except when analysed separately for Anisoptera and Zygoptera. Anisoptera showed a moderately positive relationship with the intensity of disturbance. However, it was revealed that Odonate communities are more responsive towards water quality. Zygoptera showed positive relationships with dissolved oxygen, pH and total dissolved solids and a negative relationship with nutrient levels, while Anisoptera showed a negative relationship with dissolved oxygen and nutrient levels. A statistically significant relationship was found between total dissolved solids and the evenness of Odonates together and Zygoptera. This study suggests that future research should involve a family-level approach while analysing Odonata communities and that Zygoptera and Anisoptera need to be looked at separately. Overall, this study gives a brief understanding of Odonata ecology in the Myristica swamps and highlights the need for further studies across multiple seasons to better understand the complex interrelationships between Odonata and human disturbances in the Myristica swamps.
