Abstract

The peri-urban lakes of Bangalore can have water hyacinths growing along the lakes or can be without them. There are very extensive studies done to understand the conditions that favor water hyacinths to grow in a lake and in turn how water hyacinths affect the water quality of the lake. Our primary objective was to find how water quality parameters differ between lakes that have water hyacinths in them and lakes without them. A literature search was conducted to identify the water quality parameters that could affect water hyacinth growth. The water quality parameters chosen and tested were – Total Suspended Solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Turbidity, Total Nitrogen, Total Phosphorous, and Chlorophyll-a. A sample size of 10 lakes were chosen after a pilot survey of 34 lakes, 5 lakes with water hyacinths as their primary macrophyte and 5 lakes without water hyacinths. The lakes selected were clustered in two industrial towns - Doddaballapura and Nelamangala, lying in the peri-urban interface of Bangalore. Our secondary objective was to understand the correlation of water quality parameters on the biomass % of the water hyacinths.
