Abstract
The Myristica swamps forms one of the distinct and unique habitats in the Western Ghats, India (Chandran and Mesta, 2001, Vasudeva et al, 2001). As the name indicates, the swamps are the only sites of occurrence of some members of the ancient family, Myristicaceae, such as Myristica fatua and Gymnocranthera canarica besides, few others such as Semecarpus (Anacardiaceae), Pinnaga dicksoni, Dipterocarpus indica and Pandanus sp. (Chandran and Mesta, 2001). Most of these species, especially the Myristica members have evolved several structural and physiological modifications (such as the stilt root systems) to enable them to survive under the poorly drained and anaerobic soil conditions.
