Abstract
Information on several alien species of terrestrial molluscs established in India is sparse (Veeresh et al., 1979; Raut and Ghose, 1984; Kaur, 2003). The potential havoc of these alien species on agriculture or the environment is largely undocumented in India, but potentially immense as reported in other parts of the world (Cowie, 1992). Not only are they reported to devour native plants, modifying the environment, but they probably also outcompete native gastropods (Leslie et al., 2008). Karnataka has a speciose land snail fauna with many endemics (Ramakrishna and Mitra, 2002; Madyastha, et al., 2002; Mavinkurve, et al., 2004). Adequate study on the distribution and population of terrestrial snails both native and alien is lacking in Bangalore region of Karnataka. Hence, roving surveys were carried out to understand the distribution of the malacofauna particularly pestiferous molluscs in the environs of Bangalore region.
